Workshop 1: CLOSED Cataloguing Cultural Objects: Practical Applications

How exactly does Cataloguing Cultural Objects (CCO) work? How can you apply CCO in your everyday cataloging? CCO has been introduced in several sessions in the last year, and with its publication by ALA this Spring, it will continue to be a major influence in cataloguing cultural heritage works and their images. This half-day workshop is an opportunity for hands-on use of CCO with other colleagues. Participants will work on cataloguing questions prepared by the moderators and suggested in advance by the participants. They also will have an opportunity to try cataloguing in two databases, and thus see two different applications of CCO. For part of the workshop, participants will be separated into break-out sessions where they will work on cataloging particular objects using CCO, under the guidance of a CCO Editor.

Workshop 2: Copyright Law and Image Policies and Guidelines for VR Collections
Sponsored by the Intellectual Property Rights Committee

Copyright is an integral part of the daily work of many librarians and curators. These professionals must provide access to intellectual property in the form of analog and digital images providing access to intellectual property in a legal and ethical manner for their users. The workshop will present an overview of relevant copyright laws including the U.S. Copyright Law (including the Fair Use Provision), the Sony Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 (CTEA), Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and the TEACH Act.

Prior to the workshop, participants may submit problems or questions to be addressed there will also be time for additional questions that arise during the course of discussion. Participants are encouraged to submit existing policies and guidelines in advance so that the documents can be reviewed focusing on the strengths and weaknesses including potential problem areas. All documents will be distributed to participants after registration and will also be available from the workshop coordinator, Marlene Gordon, mgordon@umich.edu.

Instructor: Peter Jaszi, American University
