Workshop 6: Introduction to Development or How to Feel Good About an Uncomfortable Subject!

This workshop will provide an overview on development basics including targeted development, donor demographics, fund-raising, capital campaigns, special projects and grant writing. Attendees will learn the difference between development and fund-raising, how to target donors, building relationships with prospects, planning techniques, and how to craft an effective grant proposal.

Instructor: Fiona Green, the Cleveland Zoological Society

Fiona Green is Manager of Capital and Special Gifts for the Cleveland Zoological Society, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the mission of Cleveland Metropark’s Zoo "to improve the future for wildlife." Fiona has 20 years' experience managing a full spectrum of development programs in a variety of organizations, such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural History. She holds a BA in art history and history from Oberlin College, where she began her career with the Allen Art Museum. She is a past board member of the Ohio Chapter of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) and has presented at AAM (American Association of Museums).

Workshop 7: Closed Digital Copystand for Dummies: A Real Life Workshop for the Rest of Us!

This workshop will cover the basics of digital copystand photography including equipment, setups, lighting, software and digital workflow issues such as batch processing and color calibration. There will be discussion of transition from analog to digital in regards to lighting, cameras and computers. Wireless setup to transmit images directly from camera to computer will be demonstrated. Color management and file type issues will also be covered.

Instructor: James T. VanRensselaer

For the past 18 years James T. Van Rensselaer has been the primary photographer and manager of Homewood Photographic and Imaging Services, the photographic department of the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. He provides a wide range of services for the University including biomedical imaging, portraiture, indoor and outdoor events and sports shooting, copy work and fine art and object photography, producing both digital and print output. Recent publications include the photography for Homewood House and Undefeated: Johns Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse in the 2005 Season. Also of note is his work photographing the Golden Koran manuscript for facsimile before it was returned to Turkey, and shooting the Walters Art Museum copy of the manuscript for the Roman de la Rose digital surrogates project. He worked with Dr. Betsy Bryan on the catalog for the National Gallery of Art exhibition The Quest for Immortality Treasures of Ancient Egypt photographing art objects in the Cairo Museum in Egypt and provides the images for the Hopkins in Egypt Today ( http://www.jhu.edu/neareast/egypttoday.html) annual web site project.

Workshop 8: The Who, What, and When of Strategic Planning

Instructor: Trudy Levy, Image Integration

"The Who, What, and When of Strategic Planning," will be instructed by Trudy Levy of Image Integration. This workshop is for those trying to make tough decisions such as choosing which subscription services, management software, or presentation tools are most appropriate for their environment, and who believe in the mantra "Life is easier with a plan." An experienced and popular VRA instructor, Trudy takes a highly interactive approach to teaching what questions you should be asking BEFORE embarking upon digital projects, and emphasizes an empowering "big picture" approach to planning for visual resources.

This approach encourages you to consider not only your discreet needs, but also how you would like to see visual resources impacting your institution, and what your role might be within that. "The Who, What, and When of Strategic Planning" will not only give you the
tools to create a strategic plan, but will also lead you through the broader process of developing a clear sense of what YOU would like visual resources to become at your institution. For anyone with questions about how to proceed in this digital age,
