In
1996 the Visual
Resources Association Executive Board established an ad hoc
committee to survey
the VRA membership on professional status issues. The committee, designated
the Ad Hoc Professional Status Survey Committee, was formed in the summer of
1997 after committee chair John Taormina issued a call for volunteers in the
spring 1997 VRA Bulletin. It was intended that the survey
investigate such issues
as levels of education, years in the profession, institutional
rank, and salaries,
as well as sizes of collections, circulation and acquisition
statistics, staffing
levels, library policies, patron groups, collection development, etc. Another
goal of this survey process, in addition to collecting important data for the
profession, was to establish a standard body of questions and an
easily adaptable
and reusable format so that similar gatherings of data could be conducted on
a regular basis, perhaps every four or five years.
The Committee initially included five VRA members: Marlene Gordon,
Mark Pompelia,
Marcia Focht, John Taormina, and Margaret Webster. To begin the process, in
July 1997 Margaret Webster distributed to the committee several surveys that
had been conducted over the years, which she had collected. After reviewing
this large body of archival material, the committee began identifying areas
and questions to include in the proposed new survey; this process continued
throughout the year.
In January 1998 Margaret Webster, in her capacity as
VRAARLIS/NA liaison,
approached the committee chair and proposed conducting a joint
survey with ARLIS/NA
since that organization also planned to survey its membership as
part of a strategic
planning process and the ARLIS/NA survey would include professional
status issues.
A VRA-ARLIS/NA joint survey was subsequently approved by both
organizations.
Four additional
members were added to the committee in 1998: Christine Bunting, representing
the ARLIS/NA Visual Resources Advisory Committee, Brenda
MacEachern, Naomi Weiss,
and Lynda White.
From
June to August
1998 committee members developed and produced the final draft of
the VRA-ARLIS/NA
Professional Status Survey. The survey sought information in six areas: (1)
personal data, (2) qualifications, (3) position data, (4)
professional activities,
(5) collection data, and (6) institutional data. The last two areas
were included
only to place the rest of the data in context. It was decided that,
while this
was valuable information, a professional status survey was not the place to
gather extensive data on collections and institutions.
In January 1999,
727 copies of the survey were mailed to all individual members of the Visual
Resources Association and to the members of the Visual Resources Division of
ARLIS/NA. The return rate was 35 percent with 251 completed surveys
being returned.
Committee member Lynda White recorded the information from all completed surveys into a spreadsheet. The following tabulated results were first published in the Spring 2000 issue of the VRA Bulletin (Vol. 27, No. 1, pp. 17-30). An analysis of the survey by Lynda White was published in the Fall 2001 VRA Bulletin (Vol. 28, No. 3, pp. 39-52) as part of the special issue, Professional Issues in Visual Resources, guest edited by Jenni Rodda.

The following data from the 1999 VRA-ARLIS/NA Professional Status survey was tabulated and collated by VRA Ad Hoc Professional Status Survey Committee member Lynda White, University of Virginia. When percentages do not add up to 100 percent it is because not everyone responded to the question. The listing of the data results is organized in the same format as the original survey in six areas: (1) personal data, (2) qualifications, (3) position data, (4) professional activities, (5) collection data, and (6) institutional data.
